We Gather As God’s People

Opening Hymn: People, Look East! The Time Is Near          #91

(Children should remain at the back of the church during the candle lighting)

Advent Candle Lighting

Celebrant:  In this Advent season we wait in hope.  We remember our longing for God to be with us and to give us peace.

People:      Today we light a third candle for joy (lights three candles).

Celebrant:   This candle reminds us that God wants us to rejoice, even when that feels hard to do.

People:      This candle is a symbol of the joy that comes when God is with us.

Celebrant:   Let us pray,

People:      O God, come, travel with us through Advent.  Give us courage to spread joy in the world.  Amen.

The Communion

Music During Communion: Deo! Marching in Bethlehem –

                                                     Shafferman

Communion Hymn:  Like A Child

1.  like a child love would send to reveal and to mend,

like a child and a friend,

Jesus comes like a child we may find

claiming heart soul and mind,

like a child strong and kind, Jesus comes

2. like a child we will meet, ragged clothes, dirty feet,

like a child on the street,

Jesus comes like a child we once knew

 coming back into view,

like a child born anew, Jesus comes

3. like a child born to pray and to show us the way,

like a child here to stay,

Jesus comes like a child we receive

 all that love can conceive,

like a child we believe Jesus comes

Announcements

Please join us for the PARISH POT LUCK LUNCH after the 10:00 a.m. service, downstairs in Bender Hall.

OUTREACH IS AT THE HEART OF FOLLOWING JESUS: for the four Sundays of Advent we will be gathering food items for the local Food Bank. There is a tree in the Sanctuary and one in Bender Hall. Our challenge is to fill the bottom of the trees with non perishable items! We can be the hands of Christ to our neighbours!

The Carleton Ecumenical Chaplaincy is again offering “THE PAUSE TABLE” during December exams.  Last year, we served up to 300 students daily, providing healthy snacks, comfort food, juice, coffee and pastoral support at a time when most students are running low on funds and energy.  You can support this in two ways: by donating goodies; or by volunteering to take a turn at the table between 10 am and 2 pm this TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18th.  For more information please speak to Yvonne Silverman (613-733-5901).

CHRISTMAS MEMORIAL FLOWER LIST:  Anyone wishing to give a donation or memorial gift towards the Christmas flowers in the church is asked to do so BEFORE this Tuesday, December 18th so that the names of those to be remembered will appear in the Christmas bulletins. Please look through the list at the back of the church of names of those to be remembered. Indicate whether you are adding new names, repeating/changing last year’s names as printed or deleting names from the list.  Envelopes are available at the back of the Church for your donation, and may be placed on the offering plate.

ADVENT EVENING PRAYER:  All are welcome to join in the worship of God through song and prayer at Saint Margaret Mary Church (at the corner of Fairbairn and Sunnyside) every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:00 during Advent (December 5th, 12th and 19th).

Please sign up to host the COFFEE AND FELLOWSHIP HOUR after Sunday morning services.  The sign-up sheet for next year is on the notice board in Bender Hall.

Please continue to put spare change in the WORLD VISION BUCKET FOR SHEILA.  As a result of your generosity, we are able to send a Christmas gift of 4 hens, 2 roosters and various classroom supplies. There is a Christmas card to sign if you wish – it is on Sheila’s table at the back.
