We Gather As God’s People

The churches of our Diocese stand on the traditional territories of the Algonquin and Mohawk Nations. May we dwell on these lands always with respect and peace.

Opening Hymn: I Vow to Thee My Country

I vow to thee, my country all earthly things above,

Entire and whole and perfect the service of my love

The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,

That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;

The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,

The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago,

Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;

We may not count her armies, we may not see her King,

Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;

And soul by soul and silently, her shining bounds increase,

And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

Collect of the Day

God of fierce Justice,

You close the mouth of those who hide behind their prayer

As they devour the poor:

Humbled by the giving of those who have so little,

Let us live from your abundance;

Through Jesus Christ, the judgement of God. Amen.

We Respond to God’s Word

Prayers of the People (Adapted from Susan Sayers)
When we are called we need to respond with obedience so that many may be brought to repentance.

Leader:  Let us pray to the God who has called us to be here, bringing to him the cares of our Church and our world. We pray for St. Martin’s, Ottawa, The Reverend Mary Catherine Garden. For the Anglican Bishop Ordinary to the Canadian Forces, the Right Reverend Nigel Shaw. For the military chaplains in and of our Diocese. We pray for Fred, our Primate, Anne, our Metropolitan, John, our Bishop, and Michael Bird, our assisting Bishop. For Arran, our priest and for all clergy and people and their ministries in the Diocese of Ottawa.

People: We pray for deeper faith among Christians, and a readiness to respond to God’s calling. For those being called to particular ministries and those called to change their way of living, we pray for courage and the grace to obey. (Silence)

Leader: Unfailing love is yours, Lord:

People: you are our rock of refuge.

Leader: We pray for all who feel pressurised to conform to wrong values in order to be accepted; for a commitment to fight evil and cultivate good in our world. (Silence)

Leader: Unfailing love is yours, Lord:

People: you are our rock of refuge.

Leader: We pray for the households of this parish and God’s indwelling there; for guidance in the everyday decisions and times of crisis. (Silence)

Leader: Unfailing love is yours, Lord:

People: you are our rock of refuge.

Leader: We pray for the weak, the vulnerable, the weary and the desolated; for those entrenched in sin and endangering others. At this time, we pray for (insert names) and for those who we name silently or aloud.  (Silence)

Leader: Unfailing love is yours, Lord:

People: you are our rock of refuge.

Leader: We pray for those who have died in God’s friendship, and give thanks for their lives. May they be called into the light of heaven. At this time, we pray for (insert names) and for those who we name silently or aloud.  (Silence)

Leader: Unfailing love is yours, Lord:

People: you are our rock of refuge.

Leader: In thankfulness we pray for those who called us to repentance and offered us the hope of new life in Christ.

Leader: Merciful God,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Anthem: Introit from Requiem Mass by Maurice Duruflé

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem; exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Eternal rest give to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn, O God, becometh Thee in Zion, and a vow shall be paid to Thee in Jerusalem; O Lord, hear my prayer, all flesh shall come to Thee. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Prayer after Communion

Holy and blessed God,

as you give us the body and blood of your Son,

guide us with your Holy Spirit,

that we may honour you not only with our lips

but also in our lives.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

EVENSONGS: This fall we will have Evensongs on Sundays at 5:30pm starting October 28th 2018 until December 9th 2018.  The Ensemble will lead the music for our next Evensong on November 18th 2018 at 5:30pm.

FROSTY’S FAIR: Thank you to everyone who helped with Frosty’s Fair, setting up, working at bazaar, and tiding up after a busy day. A special thanks to Jennifer Small her trusty crew of elves who worked away for months before yesterday’s bazaar.

COLLECTION COUNTERS: We are in need of people to count the collection after church each Sunday. Dick and Jackie have fulfilled this essential role for many years, we are deeply grateful for them assuming this responsibility. It is a fairly straightforward task that requires training. Like readers, greeters and lay administrators a weekly roster will be created. Counting will be done in pairs, no one will be alone. Depending on how many people agree to count we hope you will help with this once a month. Please speak to Jenn Small, Tara Dentry or Heather Maclachlan if you are prepared to help
