Welcome

The churches of our Diocese stand on the traditional territories of the Algonquin and Mohawk Nations. May we dwell on these lands always with respect and peace.

Opening Hymn:   O Come All Ye Faithful v.1-3                                  #118

Leader: Holy God, you promise that love is stronger than hate; that hope is stronger than fear; that joy is stronger than sorrow; that life is stronger than death.

 Light five candles.

People: God of life, help us to trust your promise. Forgive us when we deny life to ourselves, to our neighbours, and to creation. Heal our brokenness and prepare us to live in Christ’s kingdom.

God forgives you.

Forgive others; forgive yourself.

Take hold of this forgiveness and enter into the life of Christ.

Lord Jesus, come soon.

*the absolution is from New Zealand; everything else is original.

 People: this holy night is radiant with the brilliance of your one true light.  As we have known the revelation of that light on earth, bring us to see the splendor of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

We Respond To God’s Word

Prayers of the People (adapted from Susan Sayers)

Emmanuel-‘God with us’-is born at Bethlehem into the human family. Now we will be able to understand, in human terms, what God is really like.

Leader: Emmanuel, God with us:

People: we welcome you!

Leader: As we celebrate God’s coming to us as a human child, we bring the needs of our world before the God we can trust. We pray for the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ our Saviour. We pray for Fred, our Primate, Anne, our Metropolitan, John, our Bishop, and Michael Bird, our assisting Bishop. For Arran, our priest and for all clergy and people and their ministries in the Diocese of Ottawa.

People: We pray for all those who worship God in every country of our world. We pray for the grace to know and love God more deeply. (Silence)

Leader: Emmanuel, God with us:

People: we welcome you!

Leader: We pray for those who are spending this Christmas apart from those they love. We pray for those whose celebrations are tempered with sorrow or fear. (Silence)

Leader: Emmanuel, God with us:

People: we welcome you!

Leader: We pray for peace in the Holy Land and for all who now live in the city of Bethlehem.  (Silence)

Leader: Emmanuel, God with us:

People: we welcome you!

Leader: We pray for those working over Christmas, for all women giving birth and all the babies being born today. We pray for their homes and families. At this time we pray for (insert names) and those whom we name silently and aloud (Silence)

Leader: Emmanuel, God with us:

People: we welcome you!

Leader: We pray for those being born into eternal life through the gate of death and commend them to God’s love and mercy. At this time we pray for (insert names) and those whom we name silently and aloud (Silence)

Leader: Emmanuel, God with us:

People: we welcome you!

Leader: Thank you, heavenly Father, for the extraordinary love you show for us in entering our world through the natural channel of birth.

Leader: Merciful God,

People: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

We Celebrate The Presence of Jesus

 Offertory Hymn:  Once in Royal David’s City

1.Once in royal David’s city

Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her Baby

In a manger for His bed:

Mary was that mother mild,

Jesus Christ her little Child.

2. He came down to earth from heaven,

Who is God and Lord of all,

And His shelter was a stable,

And His cradle was a stall;

With the poor, and mean, and lowly,

Lived on earth our Savior holy.

3. And through all His wondrous childhood

He would honor and obey,

Love and watch the lowly maiden,

In whose gentle arms He lay:

Christian children all must be

Mild, obedient, good as He.

4. For he is our childhood’s pattern;

Day by day, like us He grew;

He was little, weak and helpless,

Tears and smiles like us He knew;

And He feeleth for our sadness,

And He shareth in our gladness.

5.And our eyes at last shall see Him,

Through His own redeeming love;

For that Child so dear and gentle

Is our Lord in heaven above,

And He leads His children on

To the place where He is gone.

6. Not in that poor lowly stable,

With the oxen standing by,

We shall see Him; but in heaven,

Set at God’s right hand on high;

Where like stars His children crowned

All in white shall wait around.

 Prayer of Offering and Thanksgiving:

God of glory,
your splendor shines from a manger in Bethlehem,
where the Light of the world is humbly born
into the darkness of human night.
Open our eyes to Christ’s presence in the shadows of our world,
so that we, like him, may become beacons of your justice,
and defenders of all for whom there is no room. Amen.

The Communion

Communion Hymn: Silent Night                                                          #119

Word of God, one with the Most High, in Whom alone we have our hope, Eternal Day of heaven and earth, We break the silence of the peaceful night; Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us! Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace, That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice; Banish the slumber of a weary soul, That brings forgetfulness of your laws! O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people Now gathered here to praise you; Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory; May they go forth filled with your gifts.

Prayer After Communion:

Radiant God,

with our eyes we have seen your salvation,

and in this meal we have feasted on your grace.

May your Word take flesh in us,

so that we may be your holy people,

revealing your glory made known to us

in Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
