Advent 4

Holy God, you promise that love is stronger than hate and that hope is stronger than fear; that joy is stronger than sorrow; that life is stronger than death.

Light four candles.

God of life, help us to trust your promise. Forgive us when we deny life to ourselves, to our neighbors, and to creation. Heal our brokenness and prepare us to live in Christ’s kingdom.

God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself. Take hold of this forgiveness and enter into the life of Christ. Lord Jesus, come soon. Original work shared by the Rev Rhonda Waters *the absolution is from the New Zealand Prayer book

The Collect of the Day

God of promise,

You look with favour on the lowly,

You scatter the proud and you fill the hungry.

May we, like Mary, respond to your call

And be obedient to your will;

Through Jesus Christ who is to come.

We Respond to God’s Word

Prayers of the People (Adapted from Susan Sayers)
When we co-operate with God amazing things happen.

Leader:  As we share in Mary and Elizabeth’s joy at the coming of our Saviour, let us quieten and still ourselves in the presence of God. Let us pray for The Well, (one of our Diocesan Community Ministries) Rachel Robinson, Executive Director. In our Companion Diocese, The Diocese of Jerusalem, we pray for Redeemer Church, Amman, Jordan.  We pray for Fred, our Primate, Anne, our Metropolitan, John, our Bishop, and Michael Bird, our assisting Bishop. For Arran, our priest and for all clergy and people and their ministries in the Diocese of Ottawa.

People: Heavenly Father, we can only marvel at the way you are happy to work with us. We want you to know that we are willing to be used. (Silence)

Leader: Let it be to me:

People: according to your will.

Leader: We call to mind before you those whom we would love to know you and we ask you to prepare their hearts to recognize you. (Silence)

Leader: Let it be to me:

People: according to your will.

Leader: We ask you to reassure and encourage us in this parish, giving us insights to the real needs and what you would have us do. (Silence)

Leader: Let it be to me:

People: according to your will.

Leader: We ask you to give us courage to continue working with you even during dark and dangerous times. (Silence)

Leader: Let it be to me:

People: according to your will.

Leader: We call to mind those who are struggling with poverty, illness or despair, and ask you to comfort them, using us however you want.  At this time, we pray for (insert names) and for those who we name silently or aloud. (Silence)

Leader: Let it be to me:

People: according to your will.

Leader: We remember those who have died and thank you for the good you have worked in their lives. May we, with them, share in the life with you that lasts for ever. At this time, we pray for (insert names) and for those who we name silently or aloud. (Silence)

Leader: Let it be to me:

 People: according to your will.

Leader: As we approach the festival of Christmas, we praise and thank you for the full provision you have given us through the coming of Jesus.

We Celebrate the Presence of Jesus

Offertory Hymn: Come Thou Redeemer of the Earth

1.Come, Thou Redeemer of the earth,

And manifest Thy virgin birth:

Let every age adoring fall;

Such birth befits the God of all.

2.Begotten of no human will,

But of the Spirit, Thou art still

The Word of God in flesh arrayed,

The promised Fruit to man displayed.

3.The virgin womb that burden gained

With virgin honor all unstained;

The banners there of virtue glow;

God in His temple dwells below.

4.Forth from His chamber goeth He,

That royal home of purity,

A giant in twofold substance one,

Rejoicing now His course to run.

5.From God the Father He proceeds,

To God the Father back He speeds;

His course He runs to death and hell,

Returning on God’s throne to dwell.

6.O equal to the Father, Thou!

Gird on Thy fleshly mantle now;

The weakness of our mortal state

With deathless might invigorate.

7.Thy cradle here shall glitter bright,

And darkness breathe a newer light,

Where endless faith shall shine serene,

And twilight never intervene.

8.All laud to God the Father be,

All praise, eternal Son, to Thee;

All glory, as is ever meet,

To God the Holy Paraclete.

Prayer over the Gifts

God of reconciliation and forgiveness,

the saving work of Christ has made our peace with you.

May that work grow toward its perfection

In all we offer you this day.

We ask this in his name. Amen

Recessional Hymn: O Come, O Come Emmanuel

1.O come, O come, Emmanuel

And ransom captive Israel

That mourns in lonely exile here

Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

2.O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free

Thine own from Satan’s tyranny

From depths of Hell Thy people save

And give them victory o’er the grave

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

3.O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer

Our spirits by Thine advent here

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night

And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

4.O come, Thou Key of David, come,

And open wide our heavenly home;

Make safe the way that leads on high,

And close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

5.O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,

Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,

In ancient times did’st give the Law,

In cloud, and majesty and awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.
