Advent III: JOY

December 16, 2018

10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist with Church School

 Prelude

We Gather As God’s People

The churches of our Diocese stand on the traditional territories of the Algonquin and Mohawk Nations. May we dwell on these lands always with respect and peace.

Opening Hymn:  Hail to the Lord’s Anointed                                                                                                #101

 Advent 3

Holy God, you promise that love is stronger than hate and that hope is stronger than fear that joy is stronger than sorrow.

Light three candles.

God of joy, help us to trust your promise. Forgive us when we forget that you are the source of all true happiness. Forgive us when we choose fleeting pleasure over the deep joy of all creation. Heal our selfishness and prepare us to live in Christ’s kingdom.

God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself. Take hold of this forgiveness and enter into the life of Christ. Lord Jesus, come soon. Original work shared by the Rev Rhonda Waters *the absolution is from the New Zealand Prayer book

The Collect of the Day

God for whom we watch and wait,

You sent John the Baptist

To prepare the way of your Son:

Give us courage to speak the truth,

To hunger for justice,

And to suffer for the cause of right,

With Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Common Worship: Additional Collects (2004).

We Respond to God’s Word

Prayers of the People (Adapted from Susan Sayers)
Our period of preparation shifts from repentance and forgiveness to the freed exhilaration of hope, as the momentous truth of God’s immanence begins to dawn on us.

Leader:  God is here with us now. Let us pray for Cornerstone/Le Pilier, (one of our Diocesan Community Ministries) Susan Garvey, Executive Director. For the residents and staff and Chaplains of the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre Deacon Caroline Ducros, Chaplain. For vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We pray for Fred, our Primate, Anne, our Metropolitan, John, our Bishop, and Michael Bird, our assisting Bishop. For Arran, our priest and for all clergy and people and their ministries in the Diocese of Ottawa.

People: God, we want to be ready to receive you. Take us as we are and cultivate in us a heart that longs for you and worships you above and beyond everything else. (Silence)

Leader: Come, O Come:

People: Emmanuel, God with us.

Leader: We open to your love the spiritual journeys of all who walk your way; protect them from evil and keep them steadfast in faith. (Silence)

Leader: Come, O Come:

People: Emmanuel, God with us.

Leader: We pray for those who give us support and encourage us and listen to us and make us laugh and share our sorrows. Bless their lives and give them joy. (Silence)

Leader: Come, O Come:

People: Emmanuel, God with us.

Leader: We remember in God’s presence those whose memories are painful, and those whose bitter resentment cramps and distorts present relationships. We ask for the healing only God can give.  At this time, we pray for (insert names) and for those who we name silently or aloud.  (Silence)

Leader: Come, O Come:

People: Emmanuel, God with us.

Leader: We call to mind those we know who have died, and any who are close to death at the moment. As they meet the one true God open their hearts to receive his love, mercy and forgiveness.  At this time, we pray for (insert names) and for those who we name silently or aloud. (Silence)

Leader: Come, O Come:

People: Emmanuel, God with us.

Leader: We give God thanks for the way none of us is beyond his saving love and the way he has promised to keep us ultimately safe. Merciful God, Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Preparing for Christmas: Daily Meditations for Advent

This year’s advent study is a personal one.  Advent is a time to focus our expectation and anticipation on “the adult Christ, the Cosmic Christ,” who challenges us to empty ourselves, to lose ourselves, to surrender. Preparing for Christmas offers daily meditations, prayers, Scripture readings, and questions for reflection for each day of Advent. Copies are available and a suggested donation of $12.50 to help cover the cost of the book is appreciated.

MUSIC AT TRINITY: Our next concert will be on January 19th 2019 at 4:30pm featuring tenor Trygve John Ringereide and pianist Parveneh Eshghi in a programme relating to Robbie Burns day. Freewill offering.
