We Gather As God’s People

The churches of our Diocese stand on the traditional territories of the Algonquin and Mohawk Nations. May we dwell on these lands always with respect and peace.

Opening Hymn: Come, Thou Long-expected Jesus                                #88

Advent 1

Celebrant: Holy God, you promise that love is stronger than hate.

Light the first candle.

People: God of love, help us to trust your promise. Forgive us when we fail to love you and our neighbours. Forgive us when we fail to love your creation. Heal our hardness of heart and prepare us to live in Christ’s kingdom.

Celebrant: God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself. Take hold of this forgiveness and enter into the life of Christ.

People: Lord Jesus, come soon.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Communion

Anthem: Zion hört die Wächter singen from Cantata 140 by J.S. Bach

Zion hears the watchmen’s voices, with gladness all her heart rejoices, she eager wakes to greet the day.  See, her Lord from heaven descending with grace and truth and power undending, her daystar dawns with brightest ray.  O come thou blessed One, Lord Jesu God’s own Son, Hosianna!  We follow there thy feast to share, and taste the joys beyond compare.

Prayer after Communion

God for whom we wait, you have fed us with the bread of eternal life. Keep us ever watchful, that we may be ready to stand before the Son of man. We ask this in the name of Christ the Lord. Amen.

Recessional Hymn: Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending

1 Lo! he comes with clouds descending, once for favored sinners slain; thousand, thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train. Alleluia! Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. 2 Ev’ry eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him, pierced, and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see.
3 Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers: with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars!   4 Yea, Amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone.
